Are we who we say we are? Is self-identification imprisoning us?
The lumpenproletar-elate. They lumpen-joy. Those scientific atheists who now populate the world have succeeded in becoming whatever it is that they say they are, as in Yahweh. The statement that concerns us today is not 'why am I whatever you say I am?' but rather 'I am whatever I say I am.' Freud predicted these gods-all-alone, alone in their satisfactions confronting a world which traumatizes them. If science, coupled with capitalism, and justified by pragmatic philosophy, produces gadgets that not only adorn but endure these false gods, then, psychoanalysis, on the other hands, attempts to extract a truth from science.
In GODS-ALL-ALONE, Duane Rousselle argues against the self-identification of the moment, seeing it as a symptom of contemporary capitalism. By helping us deal with our relationship to the Other, and to others, psychoanalysis offers an antidote.
