In this Everyday Analysis course on Freud, we introduce his ideas anachronistically through the lens of three categories of subjectivity later imagined by Jacques Lacan: the neurotic, the psychotic and the pervert. These can be conceived of as three ways in which the subject responds to the fundamental gap at the core of being: lack itself.
In the course, we consider three of Freud’s famous case studies: Little Hans, the “Rat Man” and Judge Schreber. Though it was not Freud’s intention to do so, we map these case studies to the three Lacanian categories of the subject, discussing and analysing how they fit with the Lacanian model, with the subjects we see in our society today, and with ourselves.
Responding and reacting to lack is inevitable: we do so through religion, fantasy, love, work and community. What matters - as Freud taught us - is how we do it.
The course will take place in Summer 2025 - it will be three sessions - one on each of the cases - at a time that is suitable for all the participants. Before the summer, we will be in touch with a Doodle poll so that we can ensure that all participants can join the course, from wherever you are in the world.
